The change to mandatory 10-digit dialing (ie ###-###-####) went into effect overnight. As a result, calls to any western Washington phone numbers that do not include the area code will not be connected. Instead, they result in a recorded message informing the caller their call can’t be completed as dialed.
For many, this will require a change of habit since making calls within the same area code in western Washington has always been possible since the area code could be assumed for calls made using only 7 digits (ie ###-####).
Another change is new phone numbers that would have been assigned to the 360 area code will begin being assigned to a new area code, 564, beginning some time in August.
