The 123rd Old Settlers Picnic will be held this weekend. This annual event is filled with parades, food, music and fun things to do for all ages. Whether you are attending or simply need to drive through town, here is what to plan for.
The Old Settlers Junior Parade starts at 6pm and will begin on 4th Avenue south of Main Street and proceed down Alder Street to 2nd Avenue and then on to Cherry Street. Drivers should be aware these roads will be closed at that time. Participants will begin lining up on 4th Avenue by Alder Street at 4:45pm requiring an earlier closure of that segment of the route.
The LEFT 5k Run and 2-mile Walk event will begin and end at the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center next to Pioneer Park at 9am. Organizers say runners will follow a route that leaves the Community Center and turns west onto Main Street. Runners will follow Main Street to Douglas Road and then head south on Imhof Road until turning east onto Ulrich Road. From Ulrich Road, runners will return to the Community Center northbound on Ferndale Road. Organizers say advisory “Runners on the Roadway” signs will be in place on Imhof, Ulrich and Ferndale roads during the event.
The Old Settlers Grand Parade starts at 11am and is expected to follow its regular route. This means before and during the approximately hour-long parade, Main Street will be closed west of Hovander Road and east of 4th Avenue and Washington Street will be closed west of the railroad tracks and east of Vista Drive. 3rd Avenue from Washington Street to Main Street and 1st Avenue from Main Street to Cherry Street will also be closed.
The parade route begins on Golden Eagle Drive (by Ferndale High School) and turns left onto Washington Street and then right onto 3rd Avenue. The route then turns left onto Main Street and right onto 1st Avenue. The route then ends at Cherry St (Pioneer Park).
Many parade participants will follow a return route back to the FHS parking lot via 2nd Avenue to Alder Street, Alder to 4th Avenue, 4th to Vista Drive and back to the high school parking lot. Drivers can expect delays along that route as a result.
