Ferndale Police responded to a report from Ferndale School District personnel about 9:45am this morning regarding a suspicious device found in the parking lot of the former Mountain View Elementary School campus at 5780 Hendrickson Road.

Police officers secured the device and moved it to a safe location. A K9 unit and additional support from the Bellingham Police Department were brought in to search the surrounding area for additional threats. Nothing was found as a result of the search.

The device appeared, according to a press release from the City of Ferndale, to be a modified commercial fireworks mortar. Ferndale Police believe there is no specific danger to the school, students or personnel although the investigation is ongoing.

The Ferndale School District leases some of the campus buildings to the Whatcom Discovery program. Those 38 students were able to remain on-site and continued school activities in the gymnasium.
