Original Story
As of 6pm, Marine Drive between Ferndale Road Rural Avenue and Lummi Shore Road and Ferndale Road between Marine Drive and Slater Rayhorst Road are awaiting “Road Closed” signs as water has significantly overtaken both roads.
The Nooksack River level through Ferndale is reported to have achieved the 16-foot mark as of 6pm. It is expected to recede over a foot by 6am before climbing to over 18-feet after 6pm Thursday.
While the Whatcom County Public Works “sign guy” had yet to put up the “Road Closed” signage on Marine Drive and Ferndale Road, many drivers were turning around of their own volition upon encountering the deep waters.
Slater Road has been unaffected so far but the possibility of needing to close it will increase tomorrow as the river level is expected to rise 2 feet higher than it did today.
The corner of Barrett and Paradise Roads had been closed earlier today.
Drivers should be alert for water and debris over roads near the river.
