Roads reopened following train derailment and fire in Custer

FERNDALE, Wash. — Roads in the Custer area that have been closed since the December 22nd train derailment and fire were reopened today, December 30th, according to officials with Whatcom County Public Works.

Damaged tanker rail cars were removed from the site of the derailment yesterday.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Ecology said monitoring and potential cleanup of any residual contamination found may continue for months depending on what, if anything, is found.
