ELECTION 2019 CANDIDATE PROFILE
Candidate’s submitted biography (unedited):
I have been a business owner and developer most of my adult life. I have owned and managed the Leader Block building, in historic Ferndale, for the last 18 years. The building has been involved with many different businesses and services such as: The Chamber of Commerce visitor center, 2nd Avenue Sports, Whatcom Music Conservatory, Candela Tech Enterprises, Whatcom Family Acupuncture and The Leader Block Wine Co. to name some just some. I have loved working with all of these small businesses over the years as they grow and prosper and enliven the Community. Ferndale is blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit ideally located in the state of Washington which was just designated as having the strongest economy in the country.
As a young adult, I started an import/export business in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Block countries as they transitioned from planned economies to open markets. Most recently, I exported Washington Wine to China to Some of the worlds fastest growing cities. I have been Immersed and directly involved, as a businessman and academic, with emerging markets that were on dynamic growth trajectories. It’s exciting to see this kind of growth and it’s something that I see happening in Ferndale. However, growth has not transpired as robustly as it can and as it will. The city government needs to work collaboratively, and in some instances, simply get out of the way of private investment and the animal spirits of this community’s ambitions. Ferndale needs leadership that understands and respects the free and unfettered marketplace of ideas and entrepreneurship. We cannot let this strong economic cycle pass on by as it has in the past. This is Ferndale’s time.
