FERNDALE, Wash. — Whatcom County Fire District #17 (WCFD17) recently learned they were awarded a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $18,654.28. WCFD17 Fire Chief Jim Petrie says the funds will be used to replace all of the districts old and obsolete emergency vehicle radios that no longer meet federal standards.

This is WCFD17’s 6th AFG award. Previous awards funded self-contained breathing apparatus, fire hoses, turn out gear, portable radios and a new fire truck according to Petrie.

Per FEMA, $345 million will go to support Fire and EMS Operations and Safety Grants, Firefighting and Emergency Vehicle Grants and Fire Prevention and Safety Grants. Grant amounts range from $1,000 to nearly $1-million. As of October 3rd, 842 grants had been announced.

Whatcom County Fire District #17 serves Sandy Point Shores, Sandy Point Heights and western portions of the Lummi Indian Reservation.
