Saturday garage fire in Ferndale destroys car and leaves boat damaged

FERNDALE, Wash. — Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a fire at an outside shop building in the 6200 block of Neevel Road about 12:45pm Saturday, October 12th.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) Assistant Fire Chief Dean Crosswhite said the owner was inside the building working on a car with electrical issues when he stepped away for a moment and came back to find flames coming from the building.

“The first engine that arrived from North Whatcom Fire and Rescue had it knocked down pretty good by the time an engine from WCFD7 arrived,” Crosswhite said. The fire was contained within the 1 bay in the 3-bay building.

The car was considered a total loss and a boat on a trailer being stored in the same bay as the car was damaged by the heat and smoke according to Crosswhite. There were no injuries.

Given the lack of hydrants in the area, the fire engines were supported by a tender truck that provides a large tank of water to the engine crews. Fire crews were on site for about 1.5 hours Crosswhite said.
