The Ferndale School Board voted unanimously to accept and move forward with the final recommendations of the Ferndale Community Bond Task Force as presented at last night’s School Board meeting at the Vista Middle School library.
The past two bond issue attempts failed to get voter approval and the last bond issue to receive voter approval was in 2006.
The Bond Task Force was formed to prepare a recommendation for what should be requested in the form of a bond issue to be put in front of voters later this year. The introduction to the Bond Task Force’s final recommendation explained the reasoning behind their formation and purpose.
To be sure the bond reflects the values of the Ferndale community, the Board asked the District to convene a Bond Task Force of community members to provide input into the development of the total package. To ensure the Task Force’s work was independent and directly reflected its members’ interests and values, the District engaged a third-party neutral facilitator.
The Bond Task Force was directed to consider 3 options provided by the District and a directive that Ferndale High School (FHS) was to be “a signature project.” In the end, they rejected the 3 options and developed a 4th.
Below is the final recommendations report (59 pages) as provided to the School Board members by the Bond Task Force.
District officials were asked to provide a revised Bond Task Force roster that more accurately identified School District employees and School Board members since several were not identified as such in the version delivered to the Board (page 3 in the report provided above). The revised version is provided below. District staff were identified by District officials and members who served on sub-committees are identified based on information from the Bond Task Force website.
In short, of the 86 members of the Bond Task Force, 28 (33%) are employed by the Ferndale School District. Of the 27 members who served on the work, communication or recommendations sub-committees, 5 (18.5%) are employed by the Ferndale School District.
