School District announces schedule for making up snow days

Several weeks of the winter weather season remain and the Ferndale School District has already accrued six “snow days” that, in some form, require being made up.

Tonight the Ferndale School District has announced the schedule of make up days determined after discussions with the teachers’ union and State officials.

Washington State law requires 1,027 instructional hours (~180 days) per year so when schools close due to weather, those days need to be made up.

Districts can apply to the State to have up to two days waived in extreme situations. The District had applied for those waivers and announced tonight that they had received approval from the State.

District officials met with Ferndale Education Association officials (teachers’ union) this week and developed the following calendar changes for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year:

  1. January 30 was previously scheduled as a Teacher Work Day with no classes scheduled. Now it willย be a half-day with early dismissal for all students.
  2. June 16 was previously scheduled as a half-day and the last day of school. It is now a full school day with no early dismissal for all students.
  3. June 19, 20 and 21 will be make-up school days for all students.
  4. June 21 will be a half-day and the last day of school with early dismissal for all students.

The end of the first semester has changed from January 27 to February 3 and the first day of the second semester will be February 6. No changes were included in the District announcement regarding Windward High School’s trimester schedule.

Ferndale High School and Windward High School graduation commencement dates remain unchanged.

District officials noted the possibility of more school closures given the remaining weeks of winter weather ahead.

“Since we have a couple more months of winter weather ahead of us, there is the possibility that the district may need to change dates later in the year or use its remaining inclement weather days (June 22 and 23) that were set in this yearโ€™s school calendar. We will be sure to keep you informed.”
