FERNDALE, Wash. — Back in 2007, Andrea Tranor’s vision of a community garden for Ferndale became a reality when construction began in the fall and it saw its first growing season in 2008.
Today, the Ferndale Community Service Cooperative is putting out a call for 1 or more people to volunteer in running the Ferndale Friendship Community Garden.
The garden, located just south of the Pioneer Park south parking lot, operates in partnership with the City of Ferndale who donated the land for the gardens. It includes 28 outside plots available to rent each year along with 10 indoor hoop house plots. Each year, beyond what plot renters take home, thousands of pounds of fresh produce grown at the garden is donated to the Ferndale Food Bank.

Click for more informationThe Ferndale Friendship Community Garden offers gardening plots for people who want to grow things but have little or no yard space, according to Garden Coordinator Gloria Perez. Those living in apartments and shared housing are most likely to rent plots.
Perez has been a garden volunteer since 2008 and the Garden Coordinator since 2010. She says it is time for someone with fresh ideas and energy to step in. Having 2 people take over is something Perez says is an option.
Garden Coordinator responsibilities include:
- Keeping the garden on track throughout the year
- Managing plots and supports gardeners, including the Garden Advisory Group
- Managing shed, tools, supplies, trees and beds
- Keeping up with projects and improvements
- Managing volunteers
- Supporting and enforcing organic and responsible gardening practices
- Liaising with the City and the Ferndale Community Service Cooperative
