Updated: Slater Road temporarily closed after multi-vehicle crash

Traffic was blocked east of the Nooksack River bridge this evening after a multi-vehicle crash.

First responders were dispatched to the scene of the crash about 7:30pm tonight. By 8:45pm, aid units had cleared the scene and wreckers were working to remove the vehicles involved. By 9:05pm, traffic was flowing in both directions once again.

According to Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Dean Crosswhite, two vehicles were involved. Two people were transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Crosswhite said the cars’ airbags were a major factor in keeping the injuries relatively minor.

Washington State Patrol reported the vehicles involved were a Lincoln MKS and a Chevy Cruz. The driver of the Lincoln, Jay Selix, age 65, was admitted to the hospital and later was was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). The other driver, Leonard Palermino, age 24, was also transported to the hospital and later released.
