Whatcom County Public Works has been forewarning of a several months-long closure of Slater Road to all traffic between Elder Road and Lake Terrell Road since last year and now they have set a date.
According to the Public Works website, Slater Road will be closed beginning May 1st. “Construction activities and the associated road closure is expected to continue into late 2017/early 2018. A signed detour route will be in place during construction which will include Elder Road, Unick Road and Lake Terrell Road for local traffic. The truck detour will include I-5, Grandview Road, Kickerville Road and Lake Terrell Road.”
The road closure is required to allow work crews to replace the deteriorating 10-foot wide by 7-foot tall steel arch culvert under Slater Road at Jordan Creek with a 140-foot span bridge. Conditions around the culvert had deteriorated enough to require reducing the speed limit through that segment of Slater Road from 50mph to 35mph due to the rough road surface.
The section of road is on the primary route to the Phillips 66 refinery, Alcoa Intalco Works and the Sandy Point area. Signage will direct truck traffic on I-5 to exit at Grandview Road, go west to Kickerville Road and then head south on Kickerville.
