Officials say they have begun closing Slater Road with the goal of completing the process about 9pm.

The closure follows the Nooksack River level rising to 16.5 feet by 8pm tonight. It is expected to pass the 18-foot mark about 3am tomorrow and crest about 3pm at 18.33 feet. The river level forecast shows the river level will remain above 15 feet until Tuesday morning.

Traffic will be detoured via Ferndale Road (to the north since to the south is closed) and LaBounty Drive.

While no official estimate has been given for when it will reopen, it is expected to remain closed until after the river level recedes which is not expected until Friday evening or early Saturday.

The traffic impact of Slater Road closures typically spreads to Main Street. Drivers should plan for increased traffic volumes on Main Street as a result of this closure.
