Suspect driver who fled fatal crash identified

A person suspected of being the driver in a hit and run crash that killed a local woman has been identified by the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and is being sought.

A felony warrant was issued in March for Luciano Ailon-Garcia for hit and run death, vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. According to the WSP,

On August 28, 2016, at approximately 5:00 a.m., Luciano Ailon-Garcia was driving a green, 2004 Ford Explorer eastbound on Pole Road. AilonGarcia was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a left-hand curve in the roadway. The vehicle traveled off the roadway and vaulted approximately 80 feet, coming to rest in a raspberry field. One passenger was ejected from the vehicle as it came to rest; the passenger died at the scene. A second passenger suffered fractures to his ribs as a result of the collision. Ailon-Garcia fled the collision scene on foot without providing care for the injured.

Ailon-Garcia is believed to still be in the Whatcom County area according to the WSP. He is described as 31 or 32-years-old, 4-foot 10-inches tall and 170 pounds with brown eyes, black hair and medium skin tone. His last known address was 920 Birch Bay-Lynden Road. Ailon-Garcia is known to also go by the names Luciano A. Garcia and Luis Garcia-Mendoza.

Georgianna James’ body was found outside of the green 2004 Ford Explorer at the crash site after someone noticed the wreckage in the berry field and contacted 911 about 7am the day of the crash. James, age 32, had been ejected when the vehicle left the roadway while eastbound in the 500 block of W Pole Road.

The identity of the second passenger has not been released.
