Suspect rams Ferndale Police vehicle – soon after is captured by K9 unit

About 11:30am yesterday, April 27th, Ferndale Police Department officers were dispatched to a report of a man in the driver’s seat of a Toyota RAV 4 SUV parked in a Main Street business parking lot who appeared to be injecting drugs into his arm with a needle.

The Toyota left the parking lot before officers arrived but was spotted heading south on LaBounty Drive. According to Sergeant Kevin Davis, the officer turned on his emergency lights to attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver fled at a high rate of speed.

According to emergency radio transmissions, the officer followed the Toyota south on Rural Avenue and onto Wynn Road at speeds reported to be over 70mph.

Davis said the officer terminated the pursuit due to the Toyota driver’s “extremely reckless driving which was becoming a hazard to other motorists and pedestrians. He had turned off his lights and siren but continued to watch for the Toyota. He located it in the 4500 block of Curtis Road occupied by a male driver and female passenger.

The male driver got out of the Toyota, jumped on the hood and shouted for the officer to shoot him according to Davis. The male eventually got back into the SUV, rammed the Ferndale Police patrol car and took off again.

By this time, other law enforcement personnel were arriving in the area and officers gave chase and located the now empty SUV in the 1300 block of Marietta Avenue.

A perimeter was set up around the area and with the help of Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Washington State Patrol troopers, a K9 unit tracked the suspects and about 2:30pm they were located and arrested. Aid was dispatched to treat them for dog bites.

According to jail records, Ferndale Police subsequently booked William J Moody-Hopkins, age 25, into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of hit and run of an unattended vehicle, driving without a valid operator’s license, attempting to elude a police vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing a police officer. He also had an outstanding Skagit County warrant from 2015 for failure to report to jail to serve his sentence after pleading guilty to a charge residential burglary in Skagit County Superior Court according to court documents.

Cheyanne Mathews, age 21, was arrested on a Ferndale Municipal Court warrant for shoplifting according to jail records.
