City of Ferndale Public Works crews and their contractors have plans for several projects this year. Traffic impacts can be expected around the work areas. Some of the highlights are:
Washington Street Improvement Project
The project will widen and improve Washington Street between Main Street and Vista Drive with new 5-foot-wide sidewalks, curbs, gutters, shoulders for bicycle use, an improved bus pullout, and 11-foot-wide travel lanes for vehicles. Work will also include replacing or upgrading existing, and aging, water, sewer and stormwater utilities. This major project is expected to begin this spring and continue for a few months. No specific timeline has been provided yet.
Cherry Street Sidewalk Project
The project will install new sidewalks between 1st Avenue and 3rd Avenue along the north side of Cherry Street and also along the east side of 3rd Avenue between Cherry Street and Maple Street. This project is currently slated for later this summer and will impact traffic along Cherry Street.
Compact Roundabout at Portal Way I-5 northbound on- & off-ramps
City of Ferndale Capital Projects Manager Katy Radder said the City is working with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to obtain approvals necessary to install a compact roundabout at the northbound on- and off-ramps at Portal Way. The project is expected to happen this summer and will involve a short closure of the I-5 ramps as well as impact Portal Way traffic.
Main Street Traffic Improvements Project
This project will install necessary equipment to enable connectivity between City-operated electronic traffic control signal systems currently in place along Main Street on both sides of the Nooksack River. It will also make pedestrian improvements at the intersection of 1st Avenue and Main Street along with modifications to that intersection’s turn lanes. More details on this project will be included in a future story.
