Town Hall Meeting held Tuesday for school bond proposition

Editor’s note
This story was contributed to My Ferndale News by Aspen Lindsay, a FHS student who responded to an earlier request. Hopefully this is the first of many contributions from the community. Look for a story this weekend about how you can contribute too.

On Tuesday, December 11th at 7pm, a town hall meeting was held regarding the upcoming school bond proposition expected to make a repeat appearance on a special election ballot in February. Approximately 75 people were in attendance at the meeting hosted by Support Ferndale Schools, including community members and students from Ferndale High School.

A panel was introduced at the start of the meeting and a presentation provided that went over the elements of the bond. They include the main high school building that will cost $107 million, the performing arts center will cost $2 million and critical maintenance that will cost $1 million (approximates).

However, the main point of the meeting was to get people involved.

There were several options to volunteer, such as donating to help fund the effort to support approving the bond, waving signs to get bond information out, going door-to-door to hand out information and ask people to vote and telephoning registered voters.

In the middle of the room were student volunteers, Alex Faria and Deirdre Hegarty, both seniors at Ferndale High School. They were there to share information that they collected from students about the current state of the school.

Faria and Hegarty were also planning to organize a student led tour of the school for the public to come and see the condition of the school.

The town hall meeting lasted for about an hour wherein many citizens had the opportunity to listen to the points presented in favor of the bond and sign-up to volunteer.

Below is a live-stream video from the event provided by Ferndale School District Communications & Community Engagement Coordinator Erin Vincent (about 25 minutes).
