Multiple grass fires force Bay and Blaine Road closures

According to emergency radio traffic, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies are looking for an RV thought to have caused several grass fires along Bay and Blaine Roads in the vicinity of where they intersect near Birch Bay. A witness said the RV appeared to be dragging something that was creating sparks as they drove along the road.

Firefighters from North Whatcom Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the 4600 block of Bay Road initially about 1:45pm. Several additional dispatches for additional firefighting apparatus followed bringing in Whatcom County Fire Districts 7 and 17 crews.

As a result of the fires, law enforcement report having closed Bay Road between Halibut Drive and Blaine Road and Blaine Road north of Bay.

No estimate as to when the road would be reopened.
