FERNDALE, Wash. — Whatcom County Public Works reopened Slater Road just before 2pm this afternoon, Tuesday, February 4th. The road had been preemptively closed Friday due to expected moderate flooding. The Nooksack River crested Saturday morning at 20.9 feet.
Marine Drive, between Rural Avenue and Ferndale Road, as well as Ferndale Road, between Slater Road and Marine Drive, were also recently reopened. Marine Drive, between Ferndale Road and Lummi Shore Road/Drive, remains closed.
The current Nooksack River level forecast at Ferndale expects the river to rise again Thursday but not as high as last weekend. The river is expected to crest at 16.6 feet about noon on Thursday, which is still high enough, given the already saturated ground conditions, to cause road impacts including a repeat of road closures.
Public Works crews took advantage of the lack of traffic to finish installation of gates to be used to close the road to traffic in the future, eliminating the need to transport several concrete barriers each time the road was opened or closed.
Updated current road closure information is available on the MFN Traffic page.
