FERNDALE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched shortly after 3am on Tuesday, February 9th, to the northbound I-5 off-ramp at Main Street due to a report of a vehicle on its top.
According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Rocky Oliphant, an on-duty US Customs and Border Protection officer was the first on the scene and reported that any occupants of the vehicle could not be located.
Multiple agencies began a search of the area and nearby businesses after finding blood in the vehicle according to unconfirmed law enforcement and aid radio transmissions at the time.
The driver was eventually located along with family members in another vehicle the parking lot of the nearby Pilot Travel Center, according to Oliphant.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 Fire Chief Larry Hoffman said aid crews treated a patient in the Pilot Travel Center parking lot who was then released into the custody of law enforcement.
Oliphant said a WSP trooper took the driver into custody for driving under the influence. Charges are pending with the Whatcom County Prosecutor’s office.
