The Ferndale Public Library was surprisingly busy this weekday morning as several dozen people of all ages could be seen making use of the many resources available.

The relatively new library building sports modern furnishings and an expansive offering of books on shelves but that’s where the stereotypical library offerings end.

The Ferndale Public Library is part of the Whatcom County Library System which provides several valuable services to card-carrying members both while inside the library and outside.

While away from the library, card holders have free access via smartphone and/or computer to:

  • download more than 40,000 eBooks and audiobooks
  • stream more than 9 million songs commercial free
  • download five songs a week to play offline
  • 150 magazines including Consumer Reports, The Economist, National Geographic
  • online language tutorials for more than 70 languages
  • the search the entire WCLS catalog and request or put holds on items already checked out.

While at the library, there are computers available for doing research, accessing Ancestry.com, a business project, homework, composing a resume or simply catching up on social media. In addition to the desktop computers, the Ferndale Public Library also offers laptops that can be used while onsite. This provides more flexibility to find a quiet place to sit or stay close to friends or family while surfing the web, working on a business project or catching up on local news.

Want to print out your finished resume, your business project or homework?  It is only $.10 per page for black-and-white printing and $.50 per page for color printing.

Ready to check out some books? Skip the line at the counter and take advantage of the 3 self-service check out kiosks.

Bringing a book back but the library is closed? Use the drop-off bin outside in the parking lot on east side or in the book return on the west side of the building.

Forget to bring your item back? WCLS provides a one-time automatic renewal of eligible library items at the end of the day it’s due. And there are never any fines on Kids or Teen materials.

Your WCLS library card can also be used at any Bellingham Public Library location to check out materials. You can even return those items to the Ferndale Library.

Does your group need a meeting location? Sign up for the conference room or the large event room available for free at the Ferndale Public Library.

The WCLS hosts several free community events for all ages throughout the year at the Ferndale Public Library. Check My Ferndale News’ community calendar for the latest on what events are coming up.
