Ferndale “Whatcom Champs” baseball goes on display at Whatcom Museum

A baseball with obvious ties to Whatcom County that was found in the lost-and-found at the Newberg Public Library in Newberg Oregon has been put on display by the Whatcom Museum.

According to an email from museum staff received today,

Today is opening day of Major League Baseball season and the Whatcom Museum is excited to celebrate with the display of this historic baseball that recently made its way back to Whatcom County and into the Museum’s collection.

On May 19, 1952, the Ferndale Eagles and Lynden Lions battled it out at Mount Baker High School in Deming to play what the Bellingham Herald called a β€œsudden-death playoff.” The champs? The Ferndale Eagles, whose team members’ names can be seen written across the ball.

Thanks to the Newberg Public Library in Newberg, Ore., for finding the baseball in their stacks and using social media to bring it to our attention. We’re glad to have this piece of our history home!

Visit the Whatcom Museum’s Old City Hall to see the baseball on display and to learn more about the story about its journey here.

The baseball is covered with several handwritten signatures along with the caption, β€œWhatcom County Champs 1952.”

It was learned in January that the baseball had been transferred to the museum by the library.

The Whatcom Museum is located in Bellingham at 121 Prospect Street and is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5pm.

General admission into the museum is $10, youth, military and seniors get in for $8 and children 2 – 5 years get in for $5. Children 2 and under and museum members get in free.
