Neighbors report an area that was the scene of a recent slash burn began burning again this afternoon during high winds.
Property owned by the Joseph family had been logged and slash piles from the logging had been burned and, according to Karen Joseph, they reignited today. “Lummi Forestry was doing slash burning during the week and the winds reignited the smoldering piles,” according to Joseph.
Whatcom County Fire District 17 crews and apparatus responded to the report of the outside fire about 4:40pm today.
Joseph said her husband, Aaron, dug a fire line with the family’s tractor to help contain the fire. As of 7pm, firefighters remained at the scene dealing with the fire.
Joseph said the fire appeared contained and no structures were threatened. But, she said, it was “smoking out” a lot of their Sandy Point neighbors.
I pray everyone in sandy point is ok, I used to live out there!!! I see the fire now and its huge. ?
